    13 Reasons Why Sunday, May 07, 2017 2 Comments

    I just binge watched the Selena Gomez executive produced Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and whoa it was amazing. I started watching the series yesterday around 2pm and was immediately hooked. I stayed up till 2am, finishing episode 10 at which point I decided I needed to sleep and would watch the final two episodes in the morning.

    This morning I woke up around 9am and could not wait to finish this brilliant series. I brushed my teeth and made coffee. Back in bed and ready to finish this incredible series. This is truly powerful film making with a roster of amazing up and coming actors. Throughout the series, I kept opening up my IMDB app, as I needed to know more about these talented actors. I'm pretty sure I'm now following most of them on Instagram.  I just finished watching the final two episodes and wow!!!! I highly recommend this to everyone. Aside from being incredibly entertaining, the topic is also important and reflective of some of the stresses our youth today confronts daily.

    The story is centered around a character named Hannah who has just committed suicide. Hannah has left 13 tapes behind. Each tape explains the 13 reasons why she committed suicide. Wow. Powerful stuff as we, the audience quickly become engrossed with Hannah and the 13 different individuals who all contributed to her suicide. Being a teenager is hard. If you are over the age of 18, you know, you've been there and survived it.

    Most of us graduated high school before social media was a thing. It might be hard to imagine a time before social media, however the internet is still a fairly new invention. One that did not gain popularity until the year 2000. MySpace was established in 2003, Facebook and Twitter in 2005 and Instagram in 2010. Although, hard to believe social media (as we know it today) is less than 15 years old. This means most of us are lucky that our every move wasn’t captured and documented and recorded for the entire world to see. Forever. If you were bullied, made fun of or mistreated during school, you were safe once you got home. Kids today aren’t as lucky. They are subjected to possible insults, opinions and commentary 24 hours 365 days a year as the internet never sleeps and never takes a day off.

    The negative effects of social media affect all of us, regardless of age. Fortunately, most of us are old enough to have developed a tough skin and/or a strong support group to help us survive and overcome the negative and unkind words some people write and send out into the internet for everyone to see. Now imagine being a teenager and having to deal with this. Yikes. Would we all have survived that time in our lives?

    Netflix has also released a short documentary titled 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons, a 30 minute documentary with cast, crew and psychologists about some of the themes and subjects featured in the series. I enjoyed the insight the documentary provided and was most surprised to learn that suicide is the 2nd most common cause of death in teens ages 15-19 in the United States. Accidents are #1 and homicide is #3. How is this possible? How is something that is 100% preventable the #2 cause of death for this demographic? It’s disturbing knowing that teens are taking their own lives when they have their entire futures ahead of them. Truly disturbing.

    Suicide and/or the implication of taking one's life ("I would die" or "I would kill myself") is a term that is over used in current times. I fortunately have not lost any friends or family to suicide (knock on wood), however I can't be naïve enough to think it will never affect me. Times are changing. We need to have these conversations. We need to be more aware as people. We need to be more sympathetic and understanding. No human being should live their life feeling alone or unloved. Every life has meaning. People need to know that. Especially our kids.

    Being an Uncle is without a doubt the greatest joy in my life. Having the privilege to love, inspire and protect someone is such a gift. I am blessed and honored to be Uncle Lio to many. It is an honor and a responsibility I take very seriously.  It pains me to think that some kids feel like suicide is an option or an alternative. How is this possible? My oldest niece who is 13 lost 2 classmates (her age) last year. How did this happen? Twice no less? How could their deaths have been prevented?

    Technology and having so much access to information is amazing, however it does come with a price. It pains me to think that our children’s lives have become collateral damage for this technology. The world is moving at a ridiculously fast rate. We are now too busy curating the lives we want people to think we are living, rather than actually being present for the life we are fortunate enough to live.

    Cell phones are amazing things. We now have access to more information and resources than we ever thought possible. How much are you willing to pay for this technology?

    I make it a point to be 100% present when I spend time with my nieces and nephews. The phone can wait. Love is the greatest gift in life. Spending time with the people we love is the greatest joy in life. We need to make these relationships more of a priority. No one should end their life because they feel alone. Especially our kids.

    My apologies for the heavy blog entry. This series clearly affected me. I highly recommend it to everyone. Cheers to all of you. Cheers to being better and of course more fabulous.:-)

    Additionally, the music from this series was amazing. Obviously, I made a playlist. Enjoy and thanks for reading.

      Women's March Monday, January 23, 2017

      We officially have a new president and I can’t recall a time when I felt more interested, worried and passionate about politics. It is obvious to me (and hopefully anyone with access to a computer and facts) that Barack Obama was a great president. Some might even argue he was one of the greatest presidents in this country’s history (follow link haters.). During his eight years in office he showed us what leadership, inspiration and compassion looks like. His administration consisted of individuals with no personal agenda, but rather a goal to protect the people of our great country. As an immigrant, a gay man and someone with immense amount of love and respect for women and people of different backgrounds and races, I tend to vote Democrat on most issues and candidates. That being said, as a college educated man I am always open to all arguments and view-points and have at times voted and sided with Republican leaders and ideas. Call me naïve, but I still think that the point of politics and politicians is to help and protect the people in the districts and areas they represent. These politicians were elected to protect people. As civil servants their job is to serve and protect the people in their districts and states. Call me crazy, but shouldn’t we, as people aspire to be better, to protect our children, to protect our planet, to allow ALL individuals to be themselves regardless of sex, sexual orientation, race or background. We should want to be leaders who inspire our youth to ask questions, seek out knowledge through education and promote & celebrate diversity & individuality. We should want to educate our young people that being different is not a bad thing, but rather something that makes our country “great” and more powerful. The more we know about other people, other countries, races, cultures and traditions, the more successful and productive we are as people. All this seems relatively simple to me. The fact that it’s not, is incredibly troubling and worrisome. It has never been more obvious that this country is divided. How can half of Americans have forgotten what this country is all about? What the Statue of Liberty means/represents? That as leaders of the “Free World” we are responsible for teaching and inspiring other countries to be better? Do we no longer want that amazing role and awesome responsibility? Do we no longer want to teach and inspire other nations to do the right thing? Has it really become all about what party you belong to? What happened to right or wrong? How can half of Americans side or identify with a party whose sole purpose is to contradict the other side? This election year has left me with many questions. I truly can not believe that we are this divided as a nation. It truly breaks my heart and if I had the financial means to relocate all of my family and friends to another country I would. I am worried for our future as “alternative facts” are now being told as truths. It is completely insane to think that what is happening in our country today is normal or okay. That we should just sit back and passively watch all of the great work and advances this country has made be wiped out and deleted from our country’s history. I truly am at a loss as it appears we have entered the twilight zone…

      On Saturday, January 21st, 2017, exactly one day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of our country, over 5 million people worldwide and over 1 million in D.C., came out to march, speak and make their/our voices heard. Such an amazing day filled with great love and respect for all. It started as the Women’s March on Washington, however quickly gained momentum as we couldn’t all get ourselves to D.C. to participate. Soon similar marches were being planned throughout our country and other countries worldwide with the mission and vision "to stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families - recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country."

      As an American, first and foremost, I felt an obligation to participate as equality for all is a right that should never be compromised. My parents left communist Cuba when I was four years old in order to provide my sister and I a better life in this great country. A country that is full of possibilities and opportunities. A country where freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and the right to peaceably assemble are our rights as Americans. My parents sacrificed a great deal for my sister and I to be raised in this country. I refuse to let their sacrifice and the sacrifice of other immigrants just like them to be in vain. For them, for my sister, for my niece & nephew, for all of the amazing women in my life, for all the immigrants and people of color I know and love, for the LGBTQ community, for Barack, Michelle, Joe, Bernie, Elizabeth, Hillary and all the other great people in our country I walk. Regardless of what is happening in our country, I am and will always be a proud American and for that I walk. I thank Donald Trump for making me an activist. The fight has just begun, but that’s okay. This country was made for and by immigrants. It is time to reclaim our country and to make education the priority. Knowledge is power President Trump. It is time for the people of our country to regain power. Cheers to fab people everywhere!!! I applaud everyone around the country and world who understand the difference between good and evil. It is time to wake up and take back our country. May the force be with us…

      The Fabulous Golden Globes Monday, January 09, 2017 1 Comment

      That's a wrap on the 2017 Golden Globe Awards and what a fabulous way to start award season...

      First of all, Jimmy Fallon did great job with a laugh out loud opening monologue and held his own throughout the remainder of the show. No awkward moments as he kept the show moving... Especially loved his introduction of Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. "Chastain and the Redmayne", super catchy. No doubt Jimmy Fallon did a great job, however I was dying over Goldie Hawn and Amy Shumer as presenters. Can we book them for next year or maybe even the Oscar's?!?! Someone get their perspective agents on the phone stat!!!

      Amazing speeches by Aaron Taylor Johnson, Donald Glover, Sarah Paulson, Tom Hiddleston, Emma Stone, Casey Affleck and Isabelle Huppert, however Ryan Gosling's dedication to his wife Eva Mendes and her later brother, Juan Carlos was truly moving and incredibly touching. Just when you thought this guy couldn't get any more perfect...

      The drop the mic moment of the night came when Meryl Streep was awarded the Cecile B. Demille Award. Dame Streep gave hands down the most powerful, effective, impactful and heartfelt speech of the night. It is no doubt she is the most important living actress in the world. Bravo Meryl!!! We are beyond fortunate to have you and will all be talking about this speech for a long time.

      As for the fashion...

      My best dressed stars were;

      1. Chrissy Teigen in Marchesa. She was flawless in this stunning gold metallic number. Wow!!!!
      2. Priyanka Chopra in custom Ralph Lauren. She was head to toe perfection with hair, make-up and accessories on point. Obsessed.
      3. Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad. This woman definitely knows how to wear a dress. Va Va Va Voom X 100%!!!!
      4. Blake Lively in Atelier Versace. No stylist and yet kills it every time. She was absolutely stunning in this exquisite Versace dress. Like Whoa!!!
      5. Olivia Culpo in a hand-painted Zuhair Murad. This dress was everything. It belongs in a museum as it truly is a work of art. I've never seen Olivia Culpo look better. Nick Jonas eat your heart out!!!

      Honorable mentions go to; Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad, Kerry Washington in Dolce & Gabbana, Jessica Biel in Elie Saab and Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen.

      My worst dressed stars were;

      1. Sarah Jessica Parker in Vera Wang. SJP is one of my most favorite fashion girls, however I absolutely hated everything about this. What a miss and a mess. I understand and can appreciate that she was trying to pay tribute to the late Carrie Fisher in this Star Wars' Princess Leia inspired dress and look, however she simply looked terrible. When I first saw her walk the red carpet I thought she was paying homage to the movie Trolls. Really tragic. My apologies to anyone involved with the movie, Trolls as she clearly did not have "Sunshine in her Pocket".
      2. Reese Witherspoon in Atelier Versace. For the record I loved the dress and thought Reece looked beautiful, however that being said I was beyond bored with this look. Time to try something new for the red carpet. I get it, Reece looks amazing in this kind of dress, maybe just save it for a fancy luncheon or wedding?!?! Just an idea. Don't retire the dress, just retire it from the red carpet.
      3. Winona Ryder in Viktor & Rolf. I really like Winona and I really like Viktor & Rolf, however I hate every single thing about this. Winona Ryder is not that old, yet she looked like a crazy old lady in this dress. She looked like someone nominated for (maybe) a Costume Award and not a Best Actress Award. Sad really.
      4. Hailee Steinfeld in custom Vera Wang. She looked stunning, however isn't this girl twenty and a pop singer?!? Maybe leave Vera Wang for brides and mothers of brides. Young starlets should not be wearing Vera Wang. Period.
      5. Sienna Miller in Michael Kors. One word, Snooze. I love Sienna Miller and always look forward to seeing what she is going to wear. This look left me underwhelmed, which coincidentally is a term I believe Michael Kors coined. How's that for irony.

      All in all, an awesome Awards Show. Excited to continue watching these nominated films as we count down to the Academy Awards...
